Frequently asked questions before visiting the workshop
Is a repair worth it?
Rule of thumb: if the repair costs more than half the current market value of the camera, it becomes economically questionable. Exceptions are cameras with personal or collector's value.
More details below in the »Background« section.
How much does a CLA cost?
Mechanical SLR cameras (e.g. Pentax K1000) typically 80–150 EUR. Leica M-shutter 200–400 EUR. Lens overhaul 100–300 EUR. Prices vary greatly depending on workshop and effort — inquire in writing before sending.
What can I fix myself?
Three common problems can often be solved yourself:
- Dead light meter: usually just the old PX625/PX27 mercury battery. Special adapters solve the problem permanently.
- Sticky shutter: on compact cameras (e.g. Minox 35), a careful cleaning of the shutter magnet with isopropanol often helps.
- Cloudy viewfinder / mirror: Fungus on the mirror or focusing screen can often be visibly improved with a soft brush and distilled water.
Background: when is a repair worthwhile
Analog camera repair: is it worth it?
The honest answer: it depends. Before sending your camera in, answer three questions: What is the repair worth? What can you fix yourself? When does it have to be a workshop?
How much does a camera repair cost?
The price range is huge. A CLA (Clean, Lubricate, Adjust) on a mechanical SLR like the Pentax K1000 typically costs between 80 and 150 EUR. Shutter repairs on a Leica M quickly cost 200 to 400 EUR. A lens overhaul can range from 100 to 300 EUR depending on manufacturer and complexity.
As a rule of thumb: if the repair costs more than half the current market value of the camera, it becomes economically questionable. Exceptions are cameras with personal or collector value.
Which defects can you fix yourself?
Not every defect requires a workshop. Three of the most common problems can be fixed with minimal tools:
- Battery problem: the most common cause of a "dead" light meter. Many cameras from the 60s and 70s require the now banned mercury battery PX625 or PX27. Special battery adapters solve the problem permanently for a few euros.
- Sticky shutter: for some cameras (e.g. Minox 35), a careful cleaning of the shutter magnet with isopropanol is often enough.
- Cloudy viewfinder / mirror: Fungus on the mirror or focusing screen can often be visibly improved with a soft brush and distilled water.
What should go to the workshop?
Avoid: aperture repairs in the lens (oil aperture), shutter curtain replacement (Leica, Canon), electronic defects in automatic cameras, and anything involving adjustment of film transport or the mirror mechanism. The workshops listed above have the tools, spare parts, and experience needed for these interventions.

Comments on price and service come from the community and are subjective. They serve as an initial guide. If you are seriously interested in a service, you should contact the workshop directly.
Adapters, batteries, and spare parts instead of repair
Many »broken« cameras don’t need a workshop visit — just the right adapter for mercury cells (PX625, PX27), a new battery cover, or special accessories. We design and manufacture exactly these parts.
